Director's Emeriti Circle
The focus of Director’s Emeriti is to actively and strategically support and advance the Duke-Margolis mission to improve health, health equity, and the value of health care for all. Through annual membership in the Emeriti Circle, Duke-Margolis invites its former Duke-Margolis Advisory Board members to stay engaged with and support the Institute’s leadership, Scholars, students, faculty, and its robust health policy research and analyses.
Members

Patrick Conway, DMI Advisory Board member from 2017-2025, is Chief Executive Officer of Optum, which provides an array of health care services to over 130 million people, with over $260B of revenue and almost 300,000 employee team members across the globe. Previously he served as CEO of Optum Rx, an integrated pharmacy care services organization. He also has served as CEO of Care Solutions, as President and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, as Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Quality at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and as Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation and the agency’s Chief Medical Officer. Before joining CMS, he oversaw clinical operations and quality improvement at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Patrick was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014, received the President’s Senior Executive Distinguished Service Award, and was a White House Fellow from 2007 to 2008.

Peter R. Orszag, DMI Advisory Board member from 2017-2025, is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Lazard, the preeminent global financial advisory and asset management firm. He has led the firm and been a Board Director since October 2023. He is a former CEO of Financial Advisory, leading Lazard's advisory businesses serving companies and governments across the globe. Peter was previously the firm's Head of North American Mergers & Acquisitions and Global Co-Head of Healthcare. Peter joined Lazard as Vice Chairman of Investment Banking in May 2016. In the Obama Administration, he served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and before that, as the Director of the Congressional Budget Office.
